This picture displays one of the jobs or character roles available on final fantasy, This job as shown is a known as a paladin, These warriors carry a sword and shield and are able to cast white magic, or in other words healing or curing spells. This paticular job has several different names because of their high tollerance to physical damage and insanely high defence they are known mainly as meat sheilds among final fantasy gamers, other possible names could be tank, shield, or just paladin.
This picture displays the ninja which is another tank but has a completely different style to defend against its prey. Unlike the paladin, ninja's have about average defence which makes them kind of weak to physical hits. But this doesnt stop the ninja, instead of using their defence they focus on using their spells to avoid being hit. The main tanking spell this job class uses throws up shadows in which the enemy would hit and is the ninja's trade mark.
